wow...people really are ignorant. This guy is not giving tickets, and believe you me, you cannot sell tickets on the standby line. People who wait all night are not going to let people get in who have bought tickets. Oh, and about legal matters, the freaking ticket itself says that it is ILLEGAL to sell for money. If you want to get free tickets for next season [there will be NO live shows until September or October of 2004, most likely until October 2, 2004] here is my standby guide:
Where? The 50th street side of NBC at 30 Rock Plaza [Rockefeller Center]
When? People start showing up around noon Friday if it’s not too cold. Your best bet to get tickets is to show up at around 5PM Friday, but depending on the weather, you can still have a chance at getting in even if you show up after midnight. The page comes by at 7AM Saturday morning to hand out tickets.
How Many? The line grows to about 200 over night. 150 standby tickets for dress and 100 standby tickets for live are given out Saturday morning, but none guarantee admission. This season, for dress rehearsal about 30 people have been getting in each show and about 15 for live. Sometimes no one gets in but this season people have gotten in for every show. The lowest numbers were 9 for dress and 6 for live for the Andy Roddick episode. The highest were for Al Sharpton with 80 who got in for dress!
Who? In the winter Louis and Jamie are usually the first ones there at noon on Friday. Louis has done standby for almost every show since SNL began, he saw the not ready for primetime players rehe**** for their first show! Louis and Jamie have regular seats so they don’t need to do standby but they do it to see the cast and because it’s the most fun thing in the world and then they give their standby tickets to their friends.
Guaranteed? Standby tickets don’t guarantee admission but they're your best shots at getting in if you don't have normal tickets.
Rules? You're allowed to leave the line but not for too long because it's unfair and can get disorganized. You can leave for dinner and in the middle of the night to go warm up in a deli close by. Lots of layers keep you warm and you are allowed to have chairs, but not tents.
History? Standby was originally on the 49th street side but the Rainbow Room [really fancy schmancy restaurant in Rock Center] complained so standby got moved to the 50th street side.
How to meet the cast? The cast usually comes out Friday night on the 49th street side but sometimes a cast member will go out 50th or Jimmy will come out to 50th just to say hi to the standbys. But to see the cast your best bet is to stay in NBC until you get kicked out. Usually, a few cast members will come out at around 10PM and a few more at around midnight. On Sunday morning after the show, the cast will come out from about 1:15 to 2AM. Sometimes a cast member will come out later than that but usually they are all out by around 2/2:30.
Age? The page will tell you you have to be 16 to get in; eh, if you're 13 or over you don't have to worry. [I was next to an 8 year old in the audience one time.] They say they will check ID if you look young, they don't.
Dress or Live? You can choose dress or live. It is easier to get into dress and it is about half and hour longer than the live show because some stuff gets cut.
Fun? Yes. Quite possibly the best weekend you’ll ever have.
Me? I've done standby nine times and gotten in for all nine shows [dress four times, live five times.] If you have any other questions, I don't want to take up too much space so you can email me at ChoccaLatte@aol.com.

Great stuff SNLfreak ! I am not sure about the legal bit though. Just because you print something on the ticket doesnt mean its true. I have heard that you can sell a TV ticket for as much as you want, the New York ticket resale law does not apply because the ticket has no value. I have not heard of anyone ever getting charged for selling a TV ticket have you ? I suppose its academic on SNL though, as they dont give tickets out in advance and the people on the line will rebel as you mention - Although I have heard that it does happen, joe schmoe waits on line overnight and gets the ticket and sells it on Sat night to someone else who gets on the final line - the place is such a madhouse on Sat nite that the new face gets overlooked - it does happen, I am sure.
